What Is a PDW Stock?
A PDW stock, or Personal Defense Weapon stock, is a specialized, compact firearm stock system designed to reduce the overall length of a rifle. These compact stocks collapse for easy storage and maneuverability in tight spaces. Battle Arms Development’s VERT® GEN2 PDW Stock System is available for the AR9 in 9mm, AR15/M16/M4 in 5.56mm/.223, 300BLK, 6mm ARC, etc.
Compact Design
PDW stocks are significantly shorter than traditional rifle stocks. They usually have a two-guide-rod mechanism on either side of the lower receiver that allows the stock to be retracted far shorter than the conventional receiver extension/buffer tube is capable of.
Enhanced Maneuverability & Concealment
This compact size improves maneuverability in close-quarters combat, vehicles, and other scenarios where space is limited. Not all PDW stock systems are the same in length. Some are as long as 8” and very few are shorter than 5”. The shortest versions under 5” give you the best maneuverability and concealment.
Reliability
Not all PDW butt stocks are designed to be reliable; many require modifications to the BCG or the addition of a proprietary BCG or a special adapter that changes the original functionality of the AR15 platform. A special compact buffer and spring system is also needed, but many do not cycle reliably and are unable to dampen the bolt bounce, especially in full-auto mode.
Compatibility
Many PDW butt stocks require a proprietary bolt carrier group, which forces the user to replace their existing BCG. Some better-designed PDW systems only need an adapter, but this changes the standard manual of arms for the AR-15. Both the front and rear takedown pins must be removed to separate the upper receiver from the lower receiver. This can be a hassle when trying to clear a malfunctioning weapon.
The best-designed and engineered PDW butt stocks are compatible with the standard M16 BCG and many other aftermarket direct-impingement BCGs, as well as 9mm AR-style blowback bolts, without any modifications.
Weight
One of the downsides of the compact PDW butt stock is that it is usually much heavier than the traditional M4 Carbine Buffer Tube, Stock, and Buffer setup. This is a trade-off between compact size and weight. Some PDW stock systems weigh over 35 oz, while others are as light as 19 oz or less.
User Adjustability
Most PDW butt stocks come from the factory with one setting. Most commonly, the stocks have two, four, or five positions. There is no changing of the settings once it is built at the factory. However, there is one PDW butt stock that comes from the factory with user-adjustable settings for the stock extensions, including Quick Release, Two-Position, and Five-Position options. This feature allows for a wide range of fit for the end user.
Stability
When you reduce the size or shorten something to nearly half the original equipment, there is a trade-off of features for the compact size. Many PDW butt stocks have a stability issue because some do not have cheek rests, making it difficult to achieve a good cheek weld. Some simply have poorly designed cheek rests that are uncomfortable to use. Without a proper cheek rest, which equals good stability, the accuracy and confidence of the user suffer. Always feel the ergonomics of the PDW Stock to see if you can have a good, stable lock on the gun.
Comfort
One thing that is often overlooked with a PDW stock is comfort. Some stocks lack a cheek rest, resulting in a significant gap between the rear of the buffer tube and the buttplate while the stock is extended. This gap can make shooting extremely uncomfortable. Some stocks have a cheek rest, but the material used is not comfortable, such as steel or aluminum. These materials tend to become extremely hot (when left out in the sun) or cold, which can cause shock and irritability to the shooter. Some materials and construction can also cause pinching and pulling of facial hair.
What Is a Pistol Brace?
A pistol brace, also known as a stabilizing or arm brace, is a rear-mounted accessory that helps secure your handgun or AR pistol to your forearm for improved stability. It uses Velcro to attach the firearm to your arm, providing additional support. Although pistol braces may look like a stock, they are not intended to be rested against your shoulder for stability.
Are Pistol Braces Legal?
Federal courts have ruled against the ATF's reclassification of AR-15 pistols with stabilizing braces as short-barreled rifles (SBRs). As of August 2024, pistol braces are legal to own and use on AR-15 pistols. More legal action on this issue is likely.
Why Use a PDW Pistol Brace?
AR-15 pistol braces are used to enhance stability and control when firing an AR-15 pistol, making it easier to handle and more accurate, especially in close-quarters situations. They also allow users to maintain the compactness of their pistol while providing a more comfortable shooting experience than traditional pistol grips.
